リトル・チャロ (15) Fire 火事、Dread’s Past ドレッドの過去 英語／日本語訳

今回は7月9日 PM1:35～1:45と、7月10日AM6:35～6:45放送の
「リトル・チャロ」から英語を学んでいきたいと思います。

あらすじ：これまでのリトル・チャロ
美しい日本の桜を、病気のドレッドにも見せてあげたい。
チャロはそう思うのでした。
Fire 火事 英語／日本語訳
One morning, the sound of fire engines and
police cars is roaring from nearby.
朝です 近くで消防車とパトカーの サイレンが鳴り響いています
I wonder what's happening…
なんだろう？
Maybe a fire. Look, black smoke!
Stay here. I'll go see.
火事じゃないか 見ろ 黒い煙だ！
ここで待ってろ おれが見てくる
I'm going, too.
ぼくも行く
No. It might be dangerous. Don't move.
だめだ 危ない じっとしてろ
Okay.
わかった
Dread walks slowly into the alley and disappears.
Charo stays as he was told, but finally
he runs from the nest to look for Dread
and bumps into...Sirius!
ゆっくりと路地へ消えていくドレッド
チャロはじっとしていましたが ついにドレッドを捜しに飛び出しました
そこでばったり出会ったのはシリウスです！
Charo! What are you doing here?
チャロ！ ここで何をしているんだ？
Sirius! How is the fire? Do you know?
火事は？ どうなってるの？
It started in one of those old buildings.
You'd better stay away.
あの古いピルで出火した 近寄らないほうがいい
But I'm worried about Dread.
でもドレッドのことが心配で
As long as he keeps his distance, he should be safe.
しっかり離れていれば危険はない
At that moment, the two see Catherine.
そのときキャサリンが―
Sirius! Did you make sure nobody is around?
シリウス！ あたりに誰もいないことを確認した？
Arf!
ワン！
Okay, stay right there and I'll be with you in a minute.
よし そこにいなさい すぐ戻るから

But then, a big chunk of bricks comes loose
and starts to fall.
It's right above Catherine, but she doesn't notice.
大きなレンガの塊が はがれ落ちそうです
ちょうどキャサリンの真上！ しかし彼女は気がついていません
Arf! Catherine, watch out!
キャサリン 危ない！
Sirius is just about to jump forward,
when a big, heavy shadow
knocks her out of the way!
シリウスが飛び込もうとしたそのとき
大きな影がキャサリンを突き飛ばしました
Ugh!
The big chunk of stone barely misses them.
すぐ後にレンガの塊！
Catherine!
キャサリン！
Sirius dashes over. So does a fireman.
シリウスと消防士が駆けつけました
Relax, Sirius. No damage done. I'm fine.
落ち着いて ダメージないわ 大丈夫よ
Are you hurt?
ケガは？
I don't think so, but....
Ugh! I might have sprained my ankle.
してないと… 足をくじいたみたい
Okay, we'd better get you to the hospital.
Here, can you stand up?
では病院へお連れしましょう ほら 立てますか？
Thank you. Sirius, come with me.
ありがとう シリウス いらっしゃい
At that moment, a shadow weakly rises up
from behind the fallen chunk.
落ちたレンガのむこうから 黒い影が弱々しく立ち上がりました
It's Dread! He's bleeding.
ドレッドです！ 血を流しています
Dread! It was you who saved Catherine!
キャサリンを助けたのは ドレッドだったんだね！
I thought I told you not to come.
来るなと言ったはずだ
Dread...you are bleeding. Are you all right?
ドレッド 血が出てるよ だいじょうぶ？

さあ ここから離れるぞ 急け
Yes.
うん
Meanwhile, Catherine is stroking Sirius gently
in the ambulance.
一方 救急車では キャサリンが シリウスを優しくなでていました

You are so brave.
命を救ってくれてありがとう あなたはほんとうに勇敢ね
Arf...
ワン…
But of course, Sirius is not really happy.

マルゲリータがマイアミから帰ってきました チャロは会いに行きます。

Sirius told me about the fire. Are you okay?
心配してたのよ シリウスに火事のことを聞いたけど大丈夫？
Yes. Margherita, thank you.
うん ありがとう
Wait. You must be hungry.
I'll bring you something to eat.
待ってて おなかすいてるでしよ 何か持ってきてあげるわ
Margherita goes in
and comes back pulling a toy cart
full of delicious-looking food.
レストランから引っ張ってきたカートには
おいしそうな食べ物がいっぱいです
Margherita! Thank you very much!
マルゲリータ！ ありがとう！
For you and Dread. It should last for a while.
あなたとトレッドによ しばらくもつでしょ
Yes!
うん！
But really...Dread saving Catherine....
Things work in a very strange way.
それにしてもドレッドがキャサリンを救うなんてねぇ
不思議な巡りあわせだわ
What do you mean?
どういうこと？
Margherita fixes her glance on Charo.
Then she smiles.
マルゲリータはチャロをじっと見つめました
そしてほほえんで―
Dread has really changed
since he met you, you know....
ドレッドはあなたに出会ってから ほんとうに変わったわ
Or maybe it's more like he's "returning"...
to what he used to be.
というか 昔の彼に「戻っている」みたい
He used to be
such a bright, outgoing, friendly guy.
とても陽気でフレンドリーだったのよ
Dread!?
ドレッドが!?
Sure! Hard to believe, right?
そう！ 信じられないでしょ？
Then, slightly hesitating,
she begins her story.
そして 少しためらいがちに こう語り始めました
A couple of years ago, a little girl ran out
from our place into the street
and almost got hit by a car.
あれは２、３年前 女の子が通りに走り出して
車にひかれそうになったの
It was Dread who jumped in, pushed her over
to the sidewalk, and saved her!
ドレッドが女の子を歩道へ突き飛ばして 助けたのよ

ワーオ すごいや！
Well, the tragedy starts from here.
でも それからが悲劇だったの
Catherine saw the two on the sidewalk and
thought that Dread was attacking the girl.
キャサリンがそれを見て ドレッドが女の子を襲っていると思ったのよ
It was a complete misunderstanding.
まったくの勘違いなんだけど。

そんな…
She ran over and started to hit Dread
with her nightstick.
走り寄って警棒でドレッドを打ち始めたの

え一っ！
She was trying to protect the girl,
but she hit him so hard.
キャサリンは女の子を守ろうとしたんだけど 打ち方がすごかった

in his right eye.
ドレッドが右目の視力を失ったのは そのときよ

マルゲリータ うそだと言ってくれ

でもね それがほんとうなの 以来ドレッドは人間を信じなくなった
誰とも関係を持とうとしなくなり シニカルで気難し屋さんになった

あなたに会ってから ドレッドはまた本来の姿に戻りつつあるの

もともとあの性格だったわけじゃないの
Charo says goodbye to the two and
pulls the cart carefully back to the nest.
彼らと別れ チャロはねぐらまで カートを引っ張っていきました
They eat the food gratefully.
２匹はうれしそうに食べます
Dread?
ドレッド？
Huh?
ああ？
Why did you save Catherine?
どうしてキャサリンを助けたの？
He looks at Charo for a while,
looks away, and then...
ドレッドはしばらくチャロを見つめ そしてそっぽを向いて―
Because of you...
おまえのせいさ
Charo can't hear him, but doesn't ask twice.
よく聞こえませんでしたが 聞き直すのはやめておきました
Dread eats up his share, lies down,
and starts to snore, as usual.
ドレッドは食べ終え ごろっと横になると
もういびき いつものままでした
