Still Dreaming

Charo’s search for the star talismans

has brought him to Sendai.

There he meets an unusual old man.

Oh, what a cute little doggie.

Come. Come, boy. Here you go.

It's sasakamaboko, a fish cake.

Thank you. It's good.

Looks like you were hungry.

You're good boy, aren’t you?

Oh! You have a star talisman.

You want another one?  Well, all right.

No no, I want the talisman.

Well, you are a hungry little fellow. Here.

He doesn’t get it.

Well, I better get going.

Oh, hold on.

Charo runs after the old man.

How long are you planning on following me?

As long as it takes.

If I don’t get that talisman, we're all in big trouble.

How about a haiku?

Haiku?

一句?

Ill on a journey  Dreams dance  Through faded fields

What does that mean?

Hard to understang, eh? It's haiku poetry.

It describes the beauty of nature of human nature, too.

There's no time for poetry.

How can I make you understand? I know.

Read this.

What? Shall I read it?

Yes, please. Then you’ll understand.

This makes no sense.

It doesn’t? Oh.

The two have come to a shrine.

I wonder what he's praying for.

Say, little dog. You want this, don’t you?

How did you know?

I'll tell you a secret. I’m a ghost.

I understood all along. I was just teasing you.

Oh, really?

Fact is, my spirit had been wandering for 300 years.

300 years?

300年?

Then I found this talisman, and got my old body back.

Now, I’m on my way to Matsushima, you see.

Matshushima?

松島?

Yes. For years, I traveled far and wide writing haiku.

But when I visited Matsushima,

I couldn’t write a single word.

It was just too beautiful for words.

There are some things that are truly too beautiful for words.

Ohh.

I just want to see Matsushima one more time,

and then, the talisman is yours.

It's deal. Oh, by the way, what's your name?

My name? Basho. I am famous.

Oh. Is that so?

知らない

Quite so. You didn’t know me. Well, now you do.

For about 300 years, I have watched the world change.

This land and it's people have changed.

However, some things never change.

Like what?

Like time. It never changes, never stops.

Every morning the sun rises. After every winter, spring comes.

Time keeps moving, just like an eternal traveler.

It's a big concept for a little dog. Look at this.

What is this?

A seed for a sakura tree.

My sister gave it to me as a good luck charm.

Your sister?

妹?

My little sister. Her name was Yoshi.

She was so cute, worked hard, too.

The sakura flower was her very favorite.

It's a beautiful, isn't it?

I think so, too. but Yoshi had a different idea.

You know, I like the sakura when it is not in bloom.

Really? Why is that?

People only notice the sakura when it blooms.

But all through the summer, fall and winter

it braves the sun, wind and snow.

And all just to blossom so beautifully in the spring.

That’s true.

To survive, to strive so hard for even

a single moment of happiness.

That’s how I want to live.

You're going to Matsushima, right? I hear it's lovely.

Promise you’ll write a haiku there for me, won't you?

Of course, I will.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to keep that promise to my sister.

She was so disappointed.

Before I could get back to Matsushima, I fell ill for the last time.

Oh no...

Almost there.

Wait for me. Basho.

I've waited 300 years for this.

Ah. Here we are. Oh. Look at that view.

Wow. It's beautiful.

Yoshi, Matsushima is indeed lovely.

Baho? You are...

It's finally time for me to go.

But first, I'll keep my promise.

What? You wait 300 years... and that’s it?

Like I said, flowers bloom in a moment of happiness.

But the months and years leading up to that moment,

that is a happy time, too.

Here you go.

Thank you.

Oh, yes. this sakura seed, it's yours now.

Mine?

Remember to live like a sakura.

After bitter winters come beautiful springs.

Thank you. I'll remember.

Memories bloom  Like sakura in spring  The flowers of life

Hey, that’s a haiku.

Now you understand. Farewell.

Farewell.

Through an unexpected encounter,

Charo gains another talisman and another memory.
