今回は2月18日PM1:35～1:45と、2月19日AM6:35～6:45放送の
「リトル・チャロ」から英語を学んでいきたいと思います。

あらすじ：これまでのリトル・チャロ
この世を乱す 伝説の妖怪の力を封じるため
８枚のお札を集める旅に出たチャロ
鬼や雪女 カッパなど 不思議な者たちと出会いを重ね
一歩ずつ成長していくのだった

The Sukagawa region in Fukushima Prefecture.
Here, long ago, one white dog became a lagend.
福島 須賀川 かつてこの地には
伝説となった白い犬がいたという
Wow... this is such a beautiful place.
ここは いい所だなあ…
Shiro? Shiro? Is that you?
シロ？ まさか シロか？
What?
ん？
Shiro, come boy.
シロ こっちへおいで！
Hello.
ワンワン！ こんにちは
Oh, you are not shiro.
But you look just like him, whan he was small.
ん？ ちょっと違うようだな
しかし 小さいころのシロに よく似ておるなあ
Who are you? who's Shiro.
あなたは？ シロって誰？
What's this? There's something around your neck.
A scroll. May I?
おや？ 首に何かぶら下げているな 巻物か どれどれ？
Give it back.
ワンワン！ 返してよ！
It's okay. I will give it back. I just want to read it.
Let me see.
大丈夫じゃよ 取り上げはしない ちょっと見せておくれ
Beware when the creatures,
the tricksters, the chaos-bringers, the Tenaga-Ashinaga appear.
「人を惑わし 世の中を乱す妖怪… 手長足長に用心すべし…」
The eight star talismans joined together,
a white power will contain evil.
「八ツ星の札 そろうとき 白き力 魔を封じん」
So you must be looking for the star talismans?
お前さんは この八ツ星の札を 集めているというわけか

そうだよ
This must be destiny.
You're like Shiro reborn and come back to me.
これは神のおぼし召しか お前さんは シロの生まれ変わりのようじゃ
So who's Shiro?
シロって誰なの？
Well, I'll help you look for the talismans then.
よし わしがお札探しを手伝うとしよう
Oh? You're going to help me?
え？ 手伝ってくれるの？
Of course. You understand what I’m saying.
Shiro did too, you know. Well, let's go.
そうとも わしの言うことが わかるのか？
そこもシロにそっくりじゃ さあ 行こう
And so, Charo and the kind old man
set off to find the talisman.
But as they are walking...,
こうして チャロとおじいさんは 一緒にお札探しを始めた
しかし…

気をつけて！
Oh, it's nothing.
いたたた これくらい何いともないわ
You’ll catch a cold. Let me carry you.
風邪をひくぞ ここにお入り
This old man, I wonder why he's being so very nice to me.
このおじいさんは 何でこんなに親切なんだろう

その答えは すぐにわかった

うん？ これが気になるか？
Ah. It's a talisman. Where did you get it?
あ！ お札だ そのお札どうしたの
It's not a star talisman.

八ツ星の札とは違うぞ でもこれは わしの大切な宝物じゃ

It was many, many years ago.
I had a white dog, just like you, little doggie.
A nice gentle dog, his name was Shiro.
何十年も昔の話じゃ
わしはお前さんのような 白い犬を飼っておった
名をシロといって 優しい犬じゃった
Hmm...
ふうん…
One year I got very ill. I was so ill that for the time,
I could not go on my yearly pilgrimage to Ise shrine.
And so, I decided to send Shiro in my place.
ある年 わしは病を患ってしもうてな
毎年 伊勢神宮にお参りしていたんじゃが その年は行けなくなってしまった
そこで わしの代わりに シロを行かせることにした
You... sent Shiro?
え… シロに？
Shiro was so smart he could understand what people said.
シロは人の言葉を理解するほど 賢い犬じゃった
Ooh.
ふうん
I gave him a letter, a record book and some money.
In the letter, I asked people along the way
to feed Shiro and point the way to Ise.
But Ise is very far. I worried night and day about Shiro.
わしは シロに 手紙と帳面とお金を持たせた
手紙には道行く人に シロに餌を与え 道を示してほしいと書いておいた
しかし 伊勢までは遠い わしはシロが心配でたまらなかった
Did he come back?
シロは帰って来たの？
Then, two months after he left, Shiro came back to me.
And he brought a talisman from Ise.
それから２か月後のことじゃった シロが帰って来たんじゃ
無事 伊勢のお札を持ってな
Amazing.
すごい
You understand, eh?
The most amazing part was yet to come.
お前さんにも わかるのかい？
ところが もっと驚いたのはそれからじゃ
Really?
え？
When I opened the record book Shiro brought back,
I started to cry. The name of every person who had fed Shiro,
every person who had helped him on his way...
every name was written inside.
シロが持っていた帳面を見て わしは涙が止まらなくなった
そこには道中 シロに餌を与え 支えてくださった人たちの名前が
びっしりと書かれていたんじゃよ
Oh..wow
へぇ… すごい！
This talisman is full of the kind thoughts of
many, many kind people. You see?
わかるか？
Arf.
ワン！
You're really smart, like Shiro.
お前さんはシロと一緒で賢いのう
It should be around here somewhere.
Oh. Over there.
The talisman should be in that little shrine.
There. There it is.
ふむ 確かこの辺のはずじゃが… おお あっちじゃ
あの ほこらにお札があるはずじゃ おお あれだ
A star talisman.
八ツ星の札だ！
Oh, very good.
よかったのお
What's that?
な… 何じゃ？
The Tenaga
手長だ！.
Look out.
危ない！
What the...
な… 何と！
The talisman. We almost had it.
お札が… あと少しなのに…
The talisman Shiro brought me from Ise,
I could use it on that creature.
But, what would happen to my precious talisman?
It's all I have left of Shiro…
シロが持ち帰ったこの札なら あいつを追い払うことができよう
しかし大切な札がどうなるか わからん
思い出の品はこれだけじゃ…
Oh. We're so close.
もう少しなのに
Right. You. monster. Take this.
よし 化け物め！ これでどうじゃ！
That talisman meant so much to you.
ああ… おじいさんの大切なお札が… ああ…
Oh, no. don’t be sad, little doggie.
子犬や そう悲しそうな顔をするな
But your...
でも…
It's a good thing. Many people helped Shiro and me
and I always wanted to return the favor someday.
Now, I finally, I have.
これでいいんじゃよ 多くの人がシロとわしを助けてくれた
いつかその恩返しをしたいと思っておった
それが ようやく果たせたんじゃ
That’s so...
それって…
I would never have had the talisman, never have gotten
Shiro back without the help of so many people.
Of course, I couldn’t repay them directly.
多くの人の助けがなければ あのお札は手に入らず
シロも戻っては来られなかった
今となっては その人たちに 恩返しはできぬ
But you see, the favor I owed them,
I could repay it sometime, somewhere, to someone else.
That is life. People helping each other.
しかしな 受けた恩を 誰かに どこかで 返すことはできる
そうやって人は支え合って 生きていくものじゃ
Helping each other.

Many people must have helped you, little doggie,
helped you gather those talismans, no?
それだけのお札をそろえるのに 多くの人に助けてもらったのじゃろう？
Mmm... That’s true.
うん そうだね…
Hey, time’s a wastin’. Go get that talisman.
さあ 何をしている！ お札を取らないと！
Right. It's a star talisman.
そうだ！ 八ツ星の札だ！
Well done, little doggie.
よくやったぞ 子犬よ
I guess that’s all I can do for you.

But don’t you worry, they will.

これからも多くの人の支えが 必要になるだろう
