With only seven of the eight star talismans,

Master Ku struggles to keep the Ashinaga in the vessel.

Sara and Haru are rushing to birng back the last talisman.

But time is running out.

Be still, be still.

Haru, hurry.

Sara, tell me one thing.

What?

何?

Why did you...

why did you risk your life to save mine?

Well I... I’m the girl

who loved your ancestor Shiita.

What? I see... you're the reason

I’m feeling all this power.

Yes, Haru.

It's destiny that brought us together.

Let us hurry.

The vessel can't hold any longer. Master Ku.

Taka.

Oh, Charo. Do you have the talisman?

A horse called Haru is going to get it.

I see.

そうか

Masuter Ku.

His strength is failing and with only seven talismans.

We need the last talisman now. Sara, Haru.

The Tenaga.

No. Not now.

No. The vessel.

Ah. No. The vessel has broken.

It's the...

Ashi...naga...

Taka, the Tenaga and Ashinaga must not join.

I’m on it. Tenaga, take this.

It didn’t work. And that was all I got.

Yes.

You're too late.

It talks.

Long having we slept. Now we awake.

Look. What's that light?

The talismans. Their combined power is growing.

Did we make it?

It's not working.

The Tenaga-Ashinaga are still getting bigger.

A white power.

What?

え?

The eight talismans joined.

A white power will contain evil...

We need a white power to join the talismans

to overcome the Tenaga-Ashinaga.

A white power. Just what does that mean?

Well, we’ve got to try something.

Wait. Don’t do anything rush.

We don’t know what will happen.

Taka.

It's no good.

Powerless you are before us.

A white power... Maybe I can do it. I’m white.

Charo, wait.

Sara?

I'll do it.

Sara.

This is destiny. Haru.

Sara, I’m going with you.

Thank you.

Charo, without the Tenaga-Ashinaga,

the world will be safe for both people and horses.

I will do anything to protect those I love.

Haru...

Oh. That is...

The legendary...

White power.

Ah, the sakura seed...

Where did... everybody go?

Sara. Haru. You're okay.

Charo, thank you.

You found the star talismans and saved us all.

You are very special.

I’m not special.

I just did what I thought had to be done.

And that is what makes you truly special.

I guess...

Oh, look.

Oh.. that’s the seed. It sprouted.

Never again shall the Tenaga-Ashinaga awake.

And someday, a sakura tree will blossom right here.

Sakura? Oh, yes. Shota.

Shota?

I've got to go. Shota is waiting.

Who is Shota?

He’s my owner. He's very important to me.

I hope we’ll be together forever.

I see. You're very lucky to have someone

like that in your life.

You’d better go.

Yes. I won't forget any of you. goodbye.

Charo? Charo? Ah, there you are.

I thought you’d disappeared.

Well, let's go. I left some sausage, just for you.

That’s strange.

What's strange?

Well, for a minute I thought

there were more sakura trees here than a while ago.

Taka was right.

Memories bloom

Like sakura in spring

The flowers of life

I miss them already.

Charo. Your sausage is waiting. Come on, boy.

I’m coming, Shota.

And so, Charo’s magical journey ends,

and he is reunited with Shota

under the beautiful blossoming sakura of Tohoku.

Timeless Love

All eight star talismans are needed to control

the Tenaga-Ashinaga, and the final talisman is here,

in the Tono region of Iwate Prefecture.

Charo, time is running out.

I will take the seven talismans to Master Ku.

That will buy us time. You get the last one.

Got it.

わかった

Find Oshirasama. She's the key to the last talisman.

Oshirasama?

Whinny!

Wha…?

え…?

Out of my way!

Wha…? What was that?

Not Haru again.

That runaway horse has ruined our fields.

He used to be a good horse

that understood human language.

But now, he has even stolen the star talisman.

Ha...? That horse has it?

Oh. It's him.

Charo has found the white horse.

Ah... Excuse me. Are you Mister Haru?

Who wants to know?

I am Charo. Give the talisman back, please

Why?

People are in danger. They need the talisman.

They can't have it. I've hidden it far, far away.

And I won't give it back. I can't stand people.

You don’t like people? Why not?

You wouldn’t understand.

But, uh...

でも…

We have to do something about Haru.

It's a shame, but we have to put him down.

It's the only way.

Stop it.

Who are you?

You're not from around here.

Please. Haru’s not a bad horse.

I don’t know where you come from,

but that horse is trouble. He's got to go.

But, no...

Sniffle... sniffle.

What's wrong?

I’m sad. People and horses should love each other.

You can understand me? Who are you?

I am Sara. I lived here long, long ago.

People now worship me as the goddess Oshirasama.

What? You're Oshirasama? I am Charo.

You know the horse called Haru? They say he's trouble.

I know what they say. But Haru can't be all bad.

He must have stated off a nice horse.

You... love horses, huh?

I’m looking for the talisman that Haru stole.

Without it, we're in big trouble.

The star talisman...

If the farmers kill Haru, the talisman will be lost.

But then.. We’ll never stop the Tenaga-Ashinaga.

Let's go find Haru.

Okay.

うん!

Sara.. why do you care so much about horses?

Something very sad happened to me before.

Something... sad?

過去?

I used to have a horse named shiita. We we're so close,

we could understand each other perfectly.

I would stroke Shiita’s mane and talk to him,

and he’d answer me back.

We fell in love, and I took Shiita as my husband.

Husband?

But, marriage with a horse was not allowed.

My father got so angry, he went out and killed Shiita.

That’s terrible.

Shiita! Oh, no!

I cried for three days and three nights.

Then my soul joined Shiita up in heaven.

Eventually, people started called me Oshirasama

and worshipping me.

Wow. You really do love horses.

Yes. That’s why I feel sad seeing Haru so angry

and hating people.

Oh. Look.

見て!

The hunt has started.

Oh, no… ah. There's Haru.

Charo, you watch the farmers.

I'll go and talk to Haru.

I got it.

わかった

Haru, please, you must behave.

They're going to kill you.

So? Who cares? People are monsters.

Why do you hate people so?

I heard that people... killed one of my ancestors.

What?

え?

Horses work hard to serve people.

But people will kill a horse just because he loves girl.

But that is... what was your ancestor’s name?

Shiita.

Shiita..

Now I’m getting revenge for him,

Wait. Please.

Let me go.

No. I’m not going to watch another horse get hurt.

Then don’t. Let go of me.

No. Haru. Wait.

待って!

You're getting in my way.

Stop. Please. Wait.

Let me go.

Why do you care what happens to me?

You're just a girl.

Haru... You are my...

There he is. It's Haru.

We’ve got you now.

You can't get away.

Don’t shoot Haru.

Hey. Get off me. Darn dog.

Say goodbye, Haru.

Stop. You mustn’t shoot.

Get out of the way, girl.

If you want to kill Haru,

you'll have to kill me first.

What? Why?

Sara... why?

Haru... people really do love horses.

I don’t know why, but I believe you.

People and animals have to get along.

We share the precious gift of life.

Sara...

This horse will not run wild again.

So please, don’t shoot.

Unbelievable. The horse is back to normal.

Well I guess we don’t have to shoot him.

Sara, are you okay?

Charo, thank you. I’m fine.

I never knew there we're people like you.

People aren’t bad, really.

Haru, the talisman. Please give it back.

Okay. I'll go get it.

Thank you.

But I have hidden it far away.

I won't be back before sundown.

There's no time.

Don’t worry. I'll go with him.

What's happening?

What is this power I’m feeling?

Haru, let's go.

Haru, Sara, good luck.

Will the last talisman be found in time?

The world’s fate lies in the hands of a girl and her horse.

Really?

It was many centuries ago.

The samurai worriors of this area

were sorrounded by many, many enemies.

They knew they would lose. They knew they would die.

But then, thousands of swans took to the air.

The enemy soldiers, startled by the noise, ran away.

Amazing.

Our ancestors saved those samurai warriors.

Thus, people here believe swans are the servants of god.

Taka. Are you all right?

I’m better. But I still can't fly so great.

Forget it. Did you find the talismans?

Yes. I have six of them.

Okay. Just two more now.

How’s Master Ku?

He's almost at the end of his strength.

If we don’t find all eight star talismansand get back soon,

the Tenaga-Ashinaga will run wild.

But where are the last two?

I know one place.

What?

え?

One of the talismans is on the summit of Mount Iwaki.

Mount Iwaki?

Is that a problem?

Mount Iwaki is over 1500 meters high.

The summit is covered in snow, and very hard to reach.

I see... could you fly up to the top?

After the injury, I can't fly that high.

But then.

The top of Mount Iwaki... that’s nothing for me. But.

Everyone, are you ready to return up north?

It's time to depart.

Yes, sir.

はい!

We swans are so disciplined, we’ll surely leave on time.

If I go to Mount Iwaki now...

I will have to say goodbye to my flock.

Mina, we are leaving.

Without the talismans, the world is in great danger.

What can we do? We know where one is, but...

Charo... I’m sorry.

Oh. Is that?

Mama Kuro, you’ll hurt yourself.

Don’t be silly. If I don’t take you,

you'll never get to Mount Iwaki.

When someone needs help, I have to help them.

Still Dreaming

Charo’s search for the star talismans

has brought him to Sendai.

There he meets an unusual old man.

Oh, what a cute little doggie.

Come. Come, boy. Here you go.

It's sasakamaboko, a fish cake.

Thank you. It's good.

Looks like you were hungry.

You're good boy, aren’t you?

Oh! You have a star talisman.

You want another one?  Well, all right.

No no, I want the talisman.

Well, you are a hungry little fellow. Here.

He doesn’t get it.

Well, I better get going.

Oh, hold on.

Charo runs after the old man.

How long are you planning on following me?

As long as it takes.

If I don’t get that talisman, we're all in big trouble.

How about a haiku?

Haiku?

一句?

Ill on a journey  Dreams dance  Through faded fields

What does that mean?

Hard to understang, eh? It's haiku poetry.

It describes the beauty of nature of human nature, too.

There's no time for poetry.

How can I make you understand? I know.

Read this.

What? Shall I read it?

Yes, please. Then you’ll understand.

This makes no sense.

It doesn’t? Oh.

The two have come to a shrine.

I wonder what he's praying for.

Say, little dog. You want this, don’t you?

How did you know?

I'll tell you a secret. I’m a ghost.

I understood all along. I was just teasing you.

Oh, really?

Fact is, my spirit had been wandering for 300 years.

300 years?

300年?

Then I found this talisman, and got my old body back.

Now, I’m on my way to Matsushima, you see.

Matshushima?

松島?

Yes. For years, I traveled far and wide writing haiku.

But when I visited Matsushima,

I couldn’t write a single word.

It was just too beautiful for words.

There are some things that are truly too beautiful for words.

Ohh.

I just want to see Matsushima one more time,

and then, the talisman is yours.

It's deal. Oh, by the way, what's your name?

My name? Basho. I am famous.

Oh. Is that so?

知らない

Quite so. You didn’t know me. Well, now you do.

For about 300 years, I have watched the world change.

This land and it's people have changed.

However, some things never change.

Like what?

Like time. It never changes, never stops.

Every morning the sun rises. After every winter, spring comes.

Time keeps moving, just like an eternal traveler.

It's a big concept for a little dog. Look at this.

What is this?

A seed for a sakura tree.

My sister gave it to me as a good luck charm.

Your sister?

妹?

My little sister. Her name was Yoshi.

She was so cute, worked hard, too.

The sakura flower was her very favorite.

It's a beautiful, isn't it?

I think so, too. but Yoshi had a different idea.

You know, I like the sakura when it is not in bloom.

Really? Why is that?

People only notice the sakura when it blooms.

But all through the summer, fall and winter

it braves the sun, wind and snow.

And all just to blossom so beautifully in the spring.

That’s true.

To survive, to strive so hard for even

a single moment of happiness.

That’s how I want to live.

You're going to Matsushima, right? I hear it's lovely.

Promise you’ll write a haiku there for me, won't you?

Of course, I will.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to keep that promise to my sister.

She was so disappointed.

Before I could get back to Matsushima, I fell ill for the last time.

Oh no...

Almost there.

Wait for me. Basho.

I've waited 300 years for this.

Ah. Here we are. Oh. Look at that view.

Wow. It's beautiful.

Yoshi, Matsushima is indeed lovely.

Baho? You are...

It's finally time for me to go.

But first, I'll keep my promise.

What? You wait 300 years... and that’s it?

Like I said, flowers bloom in a moment of happiness.

But the months and years leading up to that moment,

that is a happy time, too.

Here you go.

Thank you.

Oh, yes. this sakura seed, it's yours now.

Mine?

Remember to live like a sakura.

After bitter winters come beautiful springs.

Thank you. I'll remember.

Memories bloom  Like sakura in spring  The flowers of life

Hey, that’s a haiku.

Now you understand. Farewell.

Farewell.

Through an unexpected encounter,

Charo gains another talisman and another memory.

The stars are especially lovely tonight.

Yep. Not a cloud in the sky.

Just gorgeous.

Who's that?

Look. That’s Ursa Minor. The little bear.

That’s my constellation, with the North star.

Over there is procyon. It's in Canis Minor, the little dog.

My constellation.

You're so lucky.

There's no Raccoon dog, huh?

No... there's not.

Poor you...

You're strong in the rain and wind.

You deserve a constellation.

Yeah, it's okay.

Oh, we’ve got to go.

Yap.

うん

Well, then. See you tomorrow.

See you.

またね

See you guys.

Hello.

Who are you?

き… 君は?

I’m Charo.

Oh. I’m Budori.

Hi, Budori. You want your own constellation?

Yeah, for some reason there isn’t one.

You could make a fine Raccoon Dog with just three stars.

But, I guess we're not cool enough.

How come? I think raccoon dogs are cool.

You are really nice, too.

You think I’m nice?

Oh, hey. You want to come to my place?

It's small, but it's home.

Hey, what are those rocks for?

I make constellations with them.

This is Orion. This is Scorpio.

Wow... You love the stars, don’t you?

They look so small. But actually some are

thousands of times bigger than our sun.

Wow... I didn’t know that.

By the way, what brought you to our neighborhood?

I’m looking for the eight star talismans.

Without them, two evil creature will awake soon.

Wow. And you have to stop them?

It's my fault the talismans disappeared.

You're so brave.

Listen, did you hear?

Yeah, I heard. Out west, an unknown boy appeared

and helped an old lady carry her bundle of rice.

And, a strange boy appeared

and stopped a fight up north of here, too.

It's nice, but kind of creepy, too.

What is it, Budori?

Oh, nothing.

Charo, you remember what those men were talking about?

Well, that.. that was me, in human form, doing those things.

What?

え?

But, I don’t want anyone to know about it.

Raccoon dogs changing form that scares them.

But why? Those things you did helped people.

You know, my father was really good at changing form.

He was a very nice raccoon dog.

One day, a little boy got sick.

My father changed into a man

and carried him to the doctor.

He saved the boy. But when the villagers found out

my father was a raccoon dog...

they said it was his fault the boy got sick

and they attacked my father.

That’s sad.

People think we raccoon dogs trick people.

They should be thankful,

to you and to your father.

Well, we don’t do those things for thanks.

Out east, Little Shunichi is very sick.

He's been unconscious for three days.

What? But he's only five.

There are herbs they could give him for his fever, but...

Shunichi.

You know him?

Yeah, Shunichi is the son of the village head.

He took care of me when I was sick. He saved my life.

You have to help him.

Shunichi... oh, what can I do?

Ice packs, ginger drinks, nothing works.

Excuse me.

Who is it?

I am a doctor.

I was just passing through when I heard.

Your son has a fever.

Make a broth form this herb and give it to him.

Oh, thank you so much.

Hope it works.

Oh, that’s star talisman.

This is a family heirloom. Please take it.

What the..? Ah!

Oh,no. The talisman is changing me back.

Oh... What?

A raccoon dog.

I just wanted to thank him.

Little dog, will you give this to him?

I will.

わかった

Budori? Budori? It's a letter.

Charo, thank you.

The villagers know who I am now.

And people are always afraid of racoon dogs

that change form. I must go far, far away.

Wow... this is such a beautiful place.

Shiro? Shiro? Is that you?

What?

ん?

Shiro, come boy.

Hello.

Oh, you are not shiro.

But you look just like him, whan he was small.

Who are you? who's Shiro.

What's this? There's something around your neck.

A scroll. May I?

Give it back.

It's okay. I will give it back. I just want to read it.

Let me see.

Beware when the creatures,

the tricksters, the chaos-bringers, the Tenaga-Ashinaga appear.

The eight star talismans joined together,

a white power will contain evil.

So you must be looking for the star talismans?

That’s right.

This must be destiny.

You're like Shiro reborn and come back to me.

So who's Shiro?

Well, I'll help you look for the talismans then.

Oh, it's nothing.

You’ll catch a cold. Let me carry you.

Charo’s question is soon answered.

What are you looking at?

What? You want to see this?

Ah. It's a talisman. Where did you get it?

It's not a star talisman.

But this, to me, is very precious, too.

Oh?

I had a white dog, just like you, little doggie.

A nice gentle dog, his name was Shiro.

Hmm...

One year I got very ill. I was so ill that for the time,

I could not go on my yearly pilgrimage to Ise shrine.

And so, I decided to send Shiro in my place.

You... sent Shiro?

Shiro was so smart he could understand what people said.

Ooh.

I gave him a letter, a record book and some money.

In the letter, I asked people along the way

to feed Shiro and point the way to Ise.

But Ise is very far. I worried night and day about Shiro.

Did he come back?

Then, two months after he left, Shiro came back to me.

And he brought a talisman from Ise.

Amazing.

すごい

You understand, eh?

The most amazing part was yet to come.

Really?

え?

When I opened the record book Shiro brought back,

I started to cry. The name of every person who had fed Shiro,

every person who had helped him on his way...

every name was written inside.

Oh..wow

This talisman is full of the kind thoughts of

many, many kind people. You see?

Arf.

You're really smart, like Shiro.

It should be around here somewhere.

Oh. Over there.

The talisman should be in that little shrine.

There. There it is.

A star talisman.

Oh, very good.

What's that?

The Tenaga

Look out.

What the...

な… 何と!

The talisman. We almost had it.

The talisman Shiro brought me from Ise,

I could use it on that creature.

But, what would happen to my precious talisman?

It's all I have left of Shiro…

Oh. We're so close.

Right. You. monster. Take this.

That talisman meant so much to you.

Oh, no. don’t be sad, little doggie.

But your...

でも…

It's a good thing. Many people helped Shiro and me

and I always wanted to return the favor someday.

Now, I finally, I have.

That’s so...

それって…

I would never have had the talisman, never have gotten

Shiro back without the help of so many people.

Of course, I couldn’t repay them directly.

But you see, the favor I owed them,

I could repay it sometime, somewhere, to someone else.

That is life. People helping each other.

Helping each other.

Many people must have helped you, little doggie,

helped you gather those talismans, no?

Mmm... That’s true.

Hey, time’s a wastin’. Go get that talisman.

Right. It's a star talisman.

Well done, little doggie.

I guess that’s all I can do for you.

You will need many others to help you, I’m sure.

But don’t you worry, they will.

Thank you so much.

Take care, little doggie.

Arf, arf!

And so, Charo continues down the road.

He takes with him the talisman,

and a new understanding of the importance

of people helping each other.

My Furusato

The iwadeyama region of Miyagi prefecture.

Land of beautiful mountains and clear waters...

and home to the Kappas, it is said.

Wha…? What's that?

That’s amazing.

You mean that? For me, that’s a piece of cake.

I’m Sachi, the coolest Kappa around.

Cool. My name is Charo.

Hey, Charo. Nice to meet you.

I’m going to Aomori to meet the Great Suiko.

Great Suiko?

The greatest Kappa. He is like a god of us.

He has finally recognized my power.

He sent me this as proof.

Oh. That’s a star talisman.

You know it?

Yeah. I've been looking for those.

I have to find them or the world is in big trouble.

You… you can't have it.

I have to have the talisman to see the Great Suiko.

What about after... after you see him?

Oh, I don’t know about that.

Oh I see.

What's it to you?

If it means so much, come with me.

You can have it when I’m done with it.

Really? Thank you.

There's something I want to do.

I’m going to show them all.

Show them? Who?

People, of course. They have forgotten all about us.

I want to remind them that Kappas are still here.

Oh.

へえ

I’m sure the Great Suiko feels the same.

That’s why he sent for me.

Why don’t you show yourself to people?

I can't. People don’t believe in Kappas anymore.

They can't see us.

Really?

Hey! A cucumber field.

Oh, wow. Watch I’m going to eat every cucumber.

You can't.

Kappas love cucumbers.

This will show those people we are still here.

Ah. Sachi... You can't. oh..

Yes. Now everybody will know the power of the Kappa.

Oh....

Oh, no. Something got into the cucumber.

That’s right. Witness the power of the Kappa.

This must be the work of the wild pigs.

It might be the racoon dogs. This is bad.

Hey. Come on. Can't you see?

It's a Kappa, you know.

Sachi, why do you hate people so much?

People, they don’t even think about us Kappas.

Not at all?

There's a girl named Yuko.

She lives near my pond.

One time, Yuko was practicing swimming.

And I sort of helped her out a little.

After that, she brought me offerings from time to time.

But..it was always rice,

ike you would offer at a Buddhist shrine.

I really hate rice. You’d think she’d say, thank you.

But, she was just being mean. Unbelievable.

Are you sure?

Yeah, of course.

Kappas love cucumbers, not rice. Come on.

Eventually, Charo and Sachi reach Aomori

where the Great Suiko lives.

Oh.

That’s the... Great Suiko?

Great Suiko. It's an honor. I’m Sachi.

Young Sachi. Do you truly wish to destroy us Kappas?

What? Me? No. Never.

You have stolen cucumbers from a field.

I just wanted to show them Kappa power.

People don’t take us seriously.

They should have to respect us.

It is true.

Many people have forgotten us kappas, it seems.

However... look there.

Great Suiko. Please watch over us and keep us safe.

This child prays to us like this every day.

He believes in us with all his heart.

Please accept today’s offering of rice.

Not rice again.

See you tomorrow, Great Suiko.

Great Suiko?

Sachi, how were those cucumbers

you stole from the field?

The taste?

味?

The rice is delicious. It is seasoned with love.

Seasoned with love?

You also know someone who believes in Kappas,

and make offerings to us, don’t you?

When humans stop believing in us,

we Kappas will cease to exist.

But we...

でも…

Sachi, humans love beauty,

especially the beauty of nature.

Majestic mountains, flowing rivers...

beautiful landscape leads to beautiful hearts,

hearts that can believe in Kappas.

A piece like that…well, that’s called a Furusato.

Furusato?

That’s right. And a Furusato is

the only place Kappas can live.

Because only there do people believe in us.

Great Suiko.

As long as that child comes here, this is my Furusato.

You have your Furusato. Take care of it.

Oh, yes, I will.

Sachi and Charo return to Iwadeyama.

It's nice here.

Yes. Somehow it seems different now.

Hey. Look there.

It's warm.. Yuko must have brought it.

It's delicious. I never realized it before.

Charo, I don’t need this talisman anymore.

You take it.

Really? Wow. Thank you.

Come back sometime. I'll always be here.

I'll be here where people believe in me,

taking care of my Furusato.

Thank you Sachi. Goodbye.

And so with the importance of Furusato in mind,

Charo continues his search for the talismans.
